Born in Tehran in 1974, Shirana Shahbazi moved to Germany when she was eleven. She studied photography in Dortmund before moving to Zurich. In 2002 she was short listed for the London Citibank Prize along with Thomas Ruff and Philip-Lorca diCorcia. Shahbazi won the prize, which suddenly exposed her work to major press coverage, and led to her participation in the Venice Biennale. Shahbazi's sharply designed installations mix photographs and commissioned billboard paintings which cast her native city of Tehran in a clear, cool light, purged of the romantic tropes that dominate depictions of contemporary Iran. Utilizing her diverse cultural background, much of Shahbazi's work deals with cultural overlaps and crossovers. She captures images from one culture only to have them 'digested' by another culture and then presented as a new representation.
