Yoshua Okon (b. 1970, Mexico City) has largely used the space in front of his video camera to document performances that either he executes or orchestrates. He currently lives and works in Mexico City and Los Angeles. His work imbues satire and caricature, putting in tension and notions of non-fixed morality and ethics to be arbitrated by the viewer. Parking Lotus was a project for which Okon asked security guards around Los Angeles to meditate in the different parking lots were they work. These actions were videotaped and photographed. The project is divided into 2 versions, a series of eight color photographs which include the LASGMM (Los Angeles Security Guard Meditation Movement) manifesto and a one channel video-installation projected monumentally as a loop onto a self-standing wall in which one by one, three guards levitate (as they meditate) until they disappear.
For Okon's Mini Wrong Gallery installation, a 3 dimensional object was modeled from the original photo images. It was designed with a hidden magnet that enables the 'Parking Lotus' to float in the gallery by being attached to the back door. It can also be secured to any steel surface or attached to the included steel plate accessory.
