Momoyo Torimitsu is an artist who considers the various social
phenomena of her time and presents, through formal means, an
opportunity for the viewer to reexamine society and life. Torimitsu's
work deals a blow to cuteness with the toughness in her as an artist.
Torimitsu's use of the bunny form describes a 'skepticism of what is
small and cute, what needs protection, and is uncorrupted, pure and
innocent.' The bunny work also is a comment of the cramped living
quarters in Tokyo, once dubbed 'rabbit hunches.'
Torimitsu was born in Tokyo in 1967 and currently
resides in New York. She has recently exhibited at Art Basel/Miami,
Gallerie Xippas, Paris, Deitch Projects, New York, Kunstmuseum Lucern,
Zurich, Switzerland, The Museum of Modern Art Roma, Rome, and the Des
Moines Center for Contemporary Art, IA. She is represented in New York
by Deitch Projects.
