The Shinique Smith multiple, "Little Nugget", is a gold Buddha-like figure based on the "Glutton" works exhibited in New York and Chicago in 2007. The "Glutton" sculptures were wrapped clothing and sprayed in gold acrylic paint. They closely relate to the recent body of work that consisted of bailed scrap fabric and comments symbolically on excess consumption and the global trade in castoffs from the West, especially in used clothing. The theme of consumption was also instrumental in conceptualizing the "Glutton"works. The multiple we have just completed for Shinique is fabricated in high fire porcelain and glazed with a 14 K gold luster finish (The prototype in the photo is plaster with gold leafing). Each edition will be positioned on a 17 x 17 x 5 inch fabric wrapped pedestal/pillow. Shinique will be choosing a different fabric for each work in the edition.
Shinique Smith has recently been included in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery exhibition, " Recognize! Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture", "Like it Like That" at the Studio Museum in Harlem, "Good Knot" at Yvon Lambert in London, and has upcoming exhibitions at Yvon Lambert in New York and Paris.
